Here is what the policy actually allows, and how medical travellers are using it well.

What the 240-hour transit visa waiver covers

The policy applies to citizens of 57 eligible countries transiting through China to a third country or region. Entry is permitted through designated open ports across 24 provinces and 65 ports — including Guangzhou Baiyun and Shenzhen Bao’an airports — and travellers may stay for up to 240 hours (10 days) within the permitted regions, which now cover most of the country’s major provinces, Guangdong included.

Two practical points matter most. First, you must hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third destination — a return to your country of origin counts. Second, the clock starts at the moment you enter, so the itinerary should be planned around it, not against it.

The 24-hour visa-free transit — open to everyone

Before turning to the 240-hour option, it is worth knowing that China offers a shorter, far broader transit waiver at every port open to foreign travellers. Under the 24-hour visa-free transit, a national of any country may pass through China without a visa, provided all of the following hold:

You hold a valid international travel document.

You hold a connecting ticket with a confirmed seat on an international flight, vessel, or train onward to a third country or region.

Your stay in China does not exceed 24 hours.

You remain within the restricted port area.

If you need to leave the port area during those 24 hours, you apply to the border inspection authority at the port for a temporary entry permit. This option is useful for tight layovers, but its 24-hour limit makes it impractical for any medical visit — which is where the 240-hour waiver comes in.

Who qualifies — the 57 eligible countries

The 240-hour waiver is limited to the following nationalities. That leaves the rest of the week open — for a second specialty visit, recovery time, or simply rest.

Specialist consultations and second opinions

Records can be reviewed remotely before departure; the in-person visit itself usually takes a single day, with any additional imaging scheduled around it.

Minor procedures and day surgery

Cataract surgery is a good example: pre-operative checks, the procedure and the first post-operative review can sit within a four-to-six-day window, with a buffer day before flying.

TCM wellness programmes

A structured course of acupuncture or tuina, combined with a constitution assessment, fits naturally into a week.

What usually needs a proper medical visa

Longer treatment courses — oncology protocols, surgical recoveries, rehabilitation programmes — generally exceed the transit window. In those cases we arrange the appropriate visa category before departure and plan the stay around the treatment calendar. Being honest about this at the planning stage is what keeps the journey serene.

How we structure a 240-hour medical trip

A typical pattern we arrange: records reviewed remotely in week one; appointments confirmed before the flight books anything; arrival met at the gate; the clinical day scheduled for day two or three, after the long flight has settled out of the body; results and follow-ups before day eight; and a genuine day of nothing at the end. Ten days is longer than most people think — when every day is arranged.

If you are from an eligible country and have been postponing care because of paperwork, this policy removes most of that paperwork. The rest is scheduling.
