About Dr. An Geng
Professor An Geng is President of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Reproductive Medicine and academic leader of its reproductive medicine centre and andrology service. He devoted his career to male infertility and male reproductive medicine, specialising in microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE), non-obstructive azoospermia and erectile dysfunction. In 2015 he pioneered micro-TESE in South China and has since completed more than 3,000 procedures, and he performed the world's first 3D-printed hydrogel scaffold repair of penile cavernosal defects. He serves as Chairman of the Male Reproductive Medicine Branch of the China Sexology Association, leads national key research projects and has published in Nature Communications.

Dr. An Geng ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Male infertility
Professor An Geng diagnoses and treats male infertility caused by sperm disorders, hormonal imbalance and genital abnormalities, integrating semen analysis, hormonal testing and individualised medical or surgical treatment to help couples conceive and to improve reproductive outcomes in routine clinical practice.
Non-obstructive azoospermia
He provides comprehensive care for non-obstructive azoospermia, combining genetic and hormonal evaluation with microdissection testicular sperm extraction to find viable sperm, and works with reproductive specialists to achieve successful fertilisation and live births for men previously considered untreatable in routine clinical practice.
Micro-TESE for severe male infertility
He performs microdissection testicular sperm extraction using an operating microscope to identify and retrieve rare sperm from men with severely impaired spermatogenesis, minimising tissue damage and enabling intracytoplasmic sperm injection, thereby giving many couples a realistic chance of biological parenthood.
More: erectile dysfunction——diagnosis and treatment; penile cavernosal defect——3D-printed repair; male hypogonadism——hormonal therapy; sperm cryopreservation——fertility preservation; genetic counselling——male infertility
Selected cases, research & publications
Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Micro-TESE for Non-Obstructive Azoospermia: Restoring Fatherhood
Men diagnosed with non-obstructive azoospermia were long told that fatherhood was impossible. Professor An Geng introduced microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE) to South China in 2015, combining it with testicular tissue cryopreservation to recover sperm and enable ICSI. More than 3,000 operations have helped couples across the Greater Bay Area achieve biological parenthood.

2. hCG Pretreatment Before micro-TESE in Klinefelter Syndrome
For men with non-mosaic Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY), sperm retrieval remains challenging. A 2020 study led by Professor An Geng’s group examined 184 patients and showed that preoperative human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) treatment significantly improves testicular sperm recovery during micro-TESE and subsequent ICSI outcomes. This fertility-preserving protocol is now cited by international urology guidelines.

3. Gonadotropin Treatment Prior to micro-TESE in Non-Obstructive Azoospermia
A single-center cohort study published in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology evaluated whether hormonal priming with gonadotropins before micro-TESE could raise sperm retrieval rates in men with non-obstructive azoospermia. The work, from Professor An Geng’s team, offers clinicians an evidence-based strategy to optimize surgical timing and improve outcomes for the hardest-to-treat infertility patients.

4. 3D-Printed Hydrogel Scaffold for Penile Corpora Cavernosa Repair
Injured corpus cavernosum cannot regenerate naturally, causing erectile dysfunction. Professor An Geng co-led a landmark study in Nature Communications building heparin-coated 3D-printed hydrogel scaffolds seeded with HIF-1 alpha-mutated muscle-derived stem cells. Implanted in rabbits, the bioengineered corpora restored erection and ejaculation and allowed the animals to father offspring, a world first for penile reconstruction.

5. Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Azoospermia Alliance
In 2026, Professor An Geng led the founding of the Greater Bay Area Azoospermia Alliance, uniting more than 50 hospitals to standardize diagnosis and treatment. The initiative aims to make sperm retrieval and micro-TESE accessible and consistent for azoospermic men, reducing the diagnostic delays and regional disparities that leave many infertility patients without proper care.

6. Clinical Trial on Mitochondrial Gene Defects and Sperm Retrieval
A registered clinical trial investigates mitochondrial gene variants, including MT-ND1, as contributors to non-obstructive azoospermia and predictors of micro-TESE success. Conducted in Guangzhou, it reflects Professor An Geng’s translational research linking the genetic causes of sperm failure to practical surgical decision-making, helping patients understand their real chances of biological fatherhood.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
