Dr. Chen Minhu ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Inflammatory bowel disease
He diagnoses and treats Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis with individualised medical therapy, biological agents and long-term monitoring, aiming to control inflammation, heal the intestinal mucosa, prevent complications and maintain the quality of life of patients with these chronic conditions.
Helicobacter pylori infection
He studies and treats Helicobacter pylori infection and its role in peptic ulcer and gastric cancer, leading research on the bacterium's interaction with the stomach lining and on eradication strategies that reduce the risk of these diseases in high-risk populations across China.
Endoscopy and digestive disease
He performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and manages common and complex digestive diseases, from gastro-oesophageal reflux and gastritis to colorectal disease, integrating clinical assessment, laboratory tests and endoscopy to reach an accurate diagnosis and an individualised treatment plan for each patient.

1. Olamkicept Induction Therapy for Moderate-to-Severe Ulcerative Colitis: A Randomized Clinical Trial
This landmark randomized, double-blind JAMA trial led by Professor Chen Minhu evaluated olamkicept, a selective IL-6 trans-signalling inhibitor, as induction therapy for patients with active ulcerative colitis. Compared with placebo, olamkicept 600 mg produced significantly higher clinical response, clinical remission and mucosal healing rates, offering a promising new targeted treatment option for ulcerative colitis.

2. Ivarmacitinib, a Selective JAK1 Inhibitor, in Moderate-to-Severe Ulcerative Colitis: A Phase II Study
This phase II randomized trial assessed ivarmacitinib, an oral selective JAK1 inhibitor, in Chinese patients with moderate-to-severe active ulcerative colitis. The study demonstrated meaningful clinical response and mucosal healing with an acceptable safety profile, supporting oral targeted therapy as a convenient treatment option for patients whose ulcerative colitis responds poorly to conventional medicines.

3. Differentiating Intestinal Tuberculosis from Crohn’s Disease: A Diagnostic Nomogram from a 6-Year Multicenter Study
This six-year prospective multicenter study of 310 patients developed and validated two diagnostic nomograms to distinguish intestinal tuberculosis from Crohn’s disease, two conditions that look almost identical on endoscopy. Using clinical, laboratory, endoscopic, CT enterography and histological features, the models achieved over 87 percent accuracy, helping clinicians avoid misdiagnosis and choose the correct treatment.

4. Early Transmural Healing Assessed by Magnetic Resonance Enterography in Crohn’s Disease Treated with Ustekinumab
This observational study from Professor Chen Minhu’s team used magnetic resonance enterography to evaluate early transmural healing in Crohn’s disease patients receiving ustekinumab. The findings show that ustekinumab can achieve bowel wall healing beyond symptom control, providing objective imaging evidence to guide treatment decisions and long-term monitoring for patients with Crohn’s disease.

5. Role of Telemedicine in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials
This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials examined telemedicine, including remote monitoring and virtual clinics, for patients living with inflammatory bowel disease. The evidence supports telemedicine as an effective and efficient way to deliver multidisciplinary care, improve patient follow-up and maintain disease control, broadening access for people with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

6. Adalimumab for Chinese Patients with Moderately to Severely Active Crohn’s Disease: A Randomized Trial
This randomized trial led by Professor Chen Minhu confirmed the efficacy and safety of adalimumab, an anti-TNF biologic, in Chinese patients with moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease. Treatment produced clinical remission and mucosal improvement with a favourable safety profile, supporting early biologic therapy for patients with Crohn’s disease in China and the wider region.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
