About Dr. Fang Chihua
Professor Fang Chihua is academic leader of the general surgery centre, Director of the Digital Intelligent Minimally Invasive Surgery Institute and Director of the special medical service centre at Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University, and former Director of Hepatobiliary Surgery I. He has devoted more than thirty years to hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery and is a pioneer of digital medicine in China. He developed three-dimensional visualisation, laparoscopic navigation and mixed-reality systems for liver resection that markedly improve operative accuracy and safety. He has published widely in top journals, edited four major textbooks, led more than twenty national guidelines and consensus statements, and received two provincial science and technology first prizes.

Dr. Fang Chihua ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Primary liver cancer
Professor Fang treats primary hepatocellular carcinoma with individualised surgery, applying three-dimensional visualisation, navigation and mixed-reality techniques to plan and perform precise anatomical liver resection, improving diagnostic accuracy, operative success and long-term survival for patients with liver cancer in routine clinical practice.
Obstructive jaundice
He manages obstructive jaundice caused by biliary and pancreatic tumours, using imaging-based three-dimensional reconstruction to assess the biliary tree and plan minimally invasive drainage or resection that relieves jaundice and restores bile flow for patients with complex biliary obstruction in clinical practice.
Laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery
Professor Fang performs laparoscopic and minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgery, including his self-developed laparoscopic bile duct injury prevention system, to remove lesions with smaller incisions, less blood loss and faster recovery for patients with liver and biliary disease in routine practice.
More:hepatic haemangioma——resection; pancreatic tumour——surgery; biliary stones——minimally invasive treatment; liver transplantation——evaluation; surgical navigation——technology
Selected cases, research & publications
Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Augmented Reality Combined With ICG Fluorescence Guiding Laparoscopic Right Hemihepatectomy
This clinical study evaluated augmented reality navigation combined with indocyanine green fluorescence imaging to guide laparoscopic right hemihepatectomy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. It improved the accuracy of tumour localisation and resection margins, showing how digital intelligent surgery benefits liver cancer patients undergoing minimally invasive hepatectomy.

2. Three-Dimensional Visualisation Classification of the Right Intrahepatic Portal Vein
Based on three-dimensional visualisation of the right intrahepatic portal vein, this study proposed an anatomical classification to guide safer liver resection and living-donor liver transplantation. The classification helps hepatobiliary surgeons plan operations, reduce vascular injury and preserve adequate remnant liver in patients with liver tumours.

3. Chinese Multicentre Expert Consensus on Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma (2025)
This Chinese multicentre expert consensus summarised the diagnosis and treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma, integrating surgery, biliary drainage and systemic therapy. It provides standardised clinical guidance for hepatobiliary surgeons managing complex bile duct cancer, helping improve resection rates and outcomes for patients with obstructive jaundice and hilar tumours.

4. Co-Delivery of Sorafenib and an FSP1 Inhibitor Enhances Ferroptosis-Based Immunotherapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma
This nanoparticle study co-delivered sorafenib with an FSP1 inhibitor to trigger dual ferroptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma and boost anti-tumour immunotherapy. The strategy offers a promising new treatment option for patients with advanced liver cancer who respond poorly to current systemic therapy.

5. Deep Learning HRNet for Blood Vessel Identification in Laparoscopic Pancreatic Surgery
This study developed a deep-learning HRNet fully convolutional network to identify blood vessels during laparoscopic pancreatic surgery. By automatically recognising vascular anatomy in surgical video, the system supports real-time navigation and helps pancreatic cancer patients undergo safer, more precise minimally invasive resection.

6. Three-Dimensional Visualisation Guideline for Complex Liver Tumours (2026 Edition)
As lead author, this 2026 guideline standardised three-dimensional visualisation for the precise diagnosis and treatment of complex liver tumours, covering image reconstruction, surgical planning and intraoperative navigation. It provides Chinese hepatobiliary surgeons an authoritative reference to perform safer, more accurate liver resection in difficult tumour cases.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
