Dr. Gu Jie Ruo ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Ankylosing spondylitis
She diagnoses and treats ankylosing spondylitis and axial spondyloarthritis, using imaging, HLA-B27 testing and biologic therapy to control inflammation, relieve pain and morning stiffness and prevent progressive spinal fusion and long-term disability for patients living with these chronic inflammatory joint diseases.
Gout and hyperuricaemia
She manages gout and hyperuricaemia with urate-lowering therapy, lifestyle guidance and long-term monitoring, aiming to dissolve urate deposits, prevent recurrent painful attacks and protect the joints and kidneys of patients living with these common metabolic rheumatic conditions in routine clinical practice.
Rheumatoid arthritis and lupus
She treats rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and other autoimmune rheumatic diseases with individualised immunosuppressive and biologic therapy, integrating regular clinical assessment and laboratory monitoring to control disease activity and protect the joints and vital organs of patients over the long term.

Selected cases, research & publications
Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Xeligekimab (IL-17A Antagonist) for Active Radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis
This phase III randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial assessed Xeligekimab, an interleukin-17A antagonist, in Chinese patients with active radiographic axial spondyloarthritis. The 16- and 48-week results showed clinical benefit, offering an additional biologic option for patients with ankylosing spondylitis and axial spondyloarthritis.

2. AK111 Monoclonal Antibody for Active Ankylosing Spondylitis
This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase II study evaluated the efficacy and safety of the monoclonal antibody AK111 in patients with active ankylosing spondylitis. The trial provides evidence to guide targeted immunotherapy for people with persistent back pain and spinal inflammation.

3. Single-Cell Profiling of Senescent Bone Marrow Stem Cells in Ankylosing Spondylitis
Single-cell profiling identified senescent bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell subpopulations that drive pathological new bone formation in ankylosing spondylitis. The discovery helps rheumatologists understand spinal fusion and may lead to therapies that slow structural damage and spinal fusion in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

4. PD-L1-Positive Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Ectopic Bone Formation in Ankylosing Spondylitis
Single-cell RNA sequencing identified PD-L1-positive mesenchymal stem cells with enhanced immunomodulatory capacity that alleviated ectopic new bone formation in ankylosing spondylitis. This work suggests immunoregulatory cell-based strategies to reduce abnormal bone growth and improve outcomes for patients with axial spondyloarthritis and spinal inflammation.

5. ANO6 Gene Polymorphism and Ankylosing Spondylitis in a Chinese Han Population
This genetic study analyzed the association of ANO6 gene polymorphism and expression with ankylosing spondylitis in a Chinese Han population. The findings add to understanding of disease susceptibility and may help rheumatologists identify patients at higher risk for early diagnosis and targeted management.

6. A Phthalate Ester-Ankylosing Spondylitis Signature and Inflammatory Monocyte Program
Using a database-derived signature, this research linked phthalate ester exposure to ankylosing spondylitis and identified an AP-1/CXCL8 inflammatory classical-monocyte program. It highlights environmental and immune factors that may guide prevention and personalized treatment for patients with ankylosing spondylitis and axial spondyloarthritis.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
