About Dr. He Jianxing
Dr. He Jianxing is Director of Thoracic Surgery and Director of the National Respiratory Medical Centre at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, and former President of the hospital. Over more than four decades he has performed nearly 20,000 thoracic operations and pioneered thoracoscopic and non-intubated 'tubeless' lung surgery in China from 1994. His team led the world's first pig-to-human lung xenotransplantation into a brain-dead recipient and carried out major trials of adjuvant and neoadjuvant targeted therapy for resectable EGFR-mutant lung cancer. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has received the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award.

Dr. He Jianxing ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Lung cancer surgery
He performs minimally invasive thoracoscopic and robot-assisted resection of early and locally advanced lung cancer, using non-intubated tubeless techniques and precise nodule localisation to reduce pain and speed recovery for patients, while integrating targeted therapy and immunotherapy into individualised multidisciplinary treatment plans.
Lung transplantation
He leads a high-volume lung transplantation programme for end-stage lung disease, managing recipients through preoperative assessment, donor selection and postoperative critical care, and his team performed the world's first transplantation of a gene-edited pig lung into a brain-dead human recipient, advancing xenotransplantation research.
Early lung cancer screening and diagnosis
He develops low-dose CT screening strategies and artificial-intelligence tools for the early detection and precise diagnosis of pulmonary nodules, helping identify patients who benefit from timely surgery and improving long-term survival, including among people traditionally considered at lower risk of lung cancer.
More: mediastinal tumours——surgery; oesophageal cancer——minimally invasive resection; emphysema——surgical management; chest wall disease——reconstruction; thoracic trauma——emergency surgery
Selected cases, research & publications
Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Expert consensus on tubeless (non-intubated) video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery
An international expert consensus from Guangzhou standardizing tubeless, non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for lung cancer and other thoracic diseases, describing anesthesia techniques, indications and safety measures to enhance recovery after minimally invasive thoracic surgery in carefully selected patients while reducing postoperative complications.

2. Non-intubated subxiphoid uniportal VATS thymectomy with glasses-free 3D
A surgical case series describing non-intubated, subxiphoid uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy performed with glasses-free three-dimensional visualization for patients with anterior mediastinal tumors and myasthenia gravis requiring thymectomy, reducing postoperative pain, length of stay and airway complications for these carefully selected patients.

3. Non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic lung resections
A review discussing the rationale, anesthesia management and clinical outcomes of non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for lung resections, arguing that spontaneous-ventilation thoracic surgery represents a major advance in minimally invasive lung cancer treatment and offers faster recovery for suitable patients worldwide.

4. Non-intubated spontaneous-ventilation surgery for mediastinal tumors
A clinical study evaluating non-intubated spontaneous-ventilation anesthesia for the resection of mediastinal tumors in the operating room, demonstrating safe and feasible outcomes with faster recovery and fewer airway complications in patients undergoing thoracic tumor surgery for mediastinal lesions compared with conventional intubated techniques.

5. Non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic anatomical lung resections
An early report describing non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic anatomical lung resections for lung cancer, detailing the surgical technique and perioperative outcomes and supporting the wider adoption of spontaneous-ventilation thoracic surgery for early-stage lung cancer patients in clinical practice in China today.
6. Tubeless uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a current review
A recent review summarizing the development, technical refinements and oncologic outcomes of tubeless uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for lung cancer, highlighting how the tubeless approach reduces complications and speeds recovery for patients after thoracic surgery in the modern era worldwide.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
