About Dr. He Xiaoshun
Professor He Xiaoshun is Director and academic leader of the Organ Transplantation Center at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, a Central Health Consultation Expert and a visiting professor at Harvard University and Cornell University. He has devoted more than thirty years to organ transplantation, and in 2017 he performed the world's first ischemia-free liver transplantation, a technique that keeps donor organs supplied with blood and oxygen throughout preservation and avoids ischaemic injury. He has since extended the approach to kidney and heart transplantation, led a randomised controlled trial confirming its benefits, and serves on national organ donation and transplantation committees.

Dr. He Xiaoshun ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Liver transplantation
He performs liver transplantation for patients with end-stage liver disease, liver failure and liver cancer, using ischemia-free techniques and careful perioperative management to protect organ function, reduce complications and improve both short-term recovery and long-term survival after surgery in routine clinical practice for patients.
Ischemia-free organ transplantation
He pioneered ischemia-free organ transplantation, in which donor organs are continuously perfused with blood and oxygen during preservation, avoiding the ischaemic injury that limits conventional transplantation and improving outcomes for recipients receiving marginal or high-risk donor organs in routine clinical practice.
Small bowel and multi-organ transplantation
He performs small bowel and multi-organ transplantation and complex abdominal surgery for patients with intestinal failure or extensive disease, integrating organ procurement, immunotherapy and long-term follow-up to restore digestive function, prevent complications and improve quality of life for patients and their families.
More:kidney transplantation——surgery; liver cancer——transplant treatment; organ preservation——machine perfusion; intestinal failure——management; perioperative care——immunosuppression

Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. World’s First Ischemia-Free Liver Transplantation (2017)
In 2017, Professor He Xiaoshun’s team at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University performed the world’s first ischemia-free liver transplantation for a patient with cirrhosis and small liver cancer. Continuous blood and oxygen supply during procurement, preservation and implantation avoided ischemia-reperfusion injury, reducing complications for patients with end-stage liver disease.

2. Ischemia-Free Liver Transplantation: A First-in-Human Clinical Trial (2021)
Published in The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific, this first-in-human trial compared ischemia-free liver transplantation (IFLT) with conventional liver transplantation in 168 donor livers. IFLT reduced early allograft dysfunction from 50% to 5.3% and shortened intensive care stays, showing that patients with liver failure or liver cancer can receive safer transplants using marginal donor organs.

3. Randomized-Controlled Trial of Ischemia-Free Liver Transplantation (2023)
This randomized-controlled trial, published in the Journal of Hepatology, randomly assigned patients with end-stage liver disease to ischemia-free or conventional liver transplantation. Ischemia-free transplantation lowered early allograft dysfunction from 24% to 6% and post-reperfusion syndrome from 64% to 9%, giving strong clinical evidence for patients seeking safer liver transplant surgery.

4. The First Case of Ischemia-Free Kidney Transplantation in Humans (2019)
Reported in Frontiers in Medicine, this case describes the world’s first ischemia-free kidney transplantation, in which a donor kidney was procured, preserved and implanted under continuous normothermic machine perfusion. The graft produced urine throughout and functioned immediately after surgery, offering hope for patients with kidney failure awaiting transplantation with fewer ischemia-reperfusion complications.
5. World’s First Ischemia-Free Beating-Heart Transplantation (2021)
In 2021, Professor He Xiaoshun’s team completed the world’s first ischemia-free, continuously beating-heart transplantation in a 67-year-old man with end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy. Using the Life-X multi-organ perfusion system, the donor heart kept beating throughout procurement, preservation and implantation, and the patient recovered well, offering a new option for patients with heart failure.

6. Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol for Ischemia-Free Liver Transplantation (2020)
Published in BMJ Open, this phase III randomized controlled trial protocol describes how ischemia-free liver transplantation was evaluated against conventional liver transplantation for end-stage liver disease. The design compares early allograft dysfunction, biliary complications and survival, guiding evidence-based treatment decisions for patients considering liver transplantation for liver failure or liver cancer.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
