Dr. Hou Jinlin ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise

Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.

Chronic hepatitis B

He diagnoses and treats chronic hepatitis B with individualised antiviral therapy and long-term monitoring, aiming for viral suppression and functional cure and reducing the risks of cirrhosis and liver cancer in patients living with this common chronic viral infection in routine clinical practice.

Hepatitis C and fatty liver disease

He manages chronic hepatitis C and fatty liver disease with direct-acting antiviral therapy, metabolic assessment and lifestyle guidance, working to cure the infection and prevent progression to cirrhosis and liver cancer for patients with these increasingly common liver conditions in routine clinical practice.

Liver cirrhosis and liver failure

He treats liver cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure with antiviral therapy, intensive medical support and complication management, integrating close monitoring to control the underlying cause, protect residual liver function and improve survival for patients with these severe, life-threatening liver diseases.

Selected cases, research & publications

Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Xalnesiran with or without an Immunomodulator for Chronic Hepatitis B (Piranga Trial)
This phase two multicenter randomized trial led by Hou Jinlin evaluated xalnesiran, a small interfering RNA, with or without immunomodulators in one hundred fifty nine adults with chronic hepatitis B. The xalnesiran plus pegylated interferon group achieved twenty three percent hepatitis B surface antigen loss twenty four weeks after treatment, advancing combination strategies toward functional cure.
2. Bepirovirsen B-Well Trials for Functional Cure of Chronic Hepatitis B
The international B-Well one and B-Well two phase three trials, with Hou Jinlin as first author, evaluated bepirovirsen, an antisense oligonucleotide, in chronic hepatitis B. Bepirovirsen achieved functional cure rates of about twenty percent versus none with placebo, supporting a potential finite-course treatment that could allow many patients to stop lifelong nucleoside analogue therapy.
3. SHIELD App for Preventing Mother-to-Child Hepatitis B Transmission
Hou Jinlin’s team developed the SHIELD mobile application to block mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B, enrolling more than thirty thousand pregnant women with chronic hepatitis B. The digital platform standardises screening, antiviral prophylaxis and newborn immunisation, dramatically reducing infant infection and supporting China’s progress toward eliminating hepatitis B transmission in newborns.
4. GAAD Algorithmic Score for Early Detection of Hepatitis B Related Liver Cancer
Hou Jinlin contributed to the GAAD score, a blood-based algorithm combining gender, age, alpha fetoprotein and PIVKA-II, for early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with chronic hepatitis B and cirrhosis. The model improves early diagnosis of liver cancer in high-risk patients, enabling timely curative therapy and better long-term survival outcomes.
5. AHB-137 Antisense Oligonucleotide and Durable Functional Cure
Hou Jinlin presented long-term follow-up data of AHB-137, an investigational antisense oligonucleotide for chronic hepatitis B, at The Liver Meeting 2026. The AB-10-8004 study reported durability of functional cure in treatment-naive patients and in nucleoside analogue treated patients, offering evidence for finite-duration regimens aimed at curing chronic hepatitis B.
6. HRS-5635 Phase Three Trial in Chronic Hepatitis B (NCT07606950)
Hou Jinlin serves as principal investigator of a phase three clinical trial of HRS-5635 for chronic hepatitis B at Nanfang Hospital. The study evaluates a novel agent for virologic suppression and hepatitis B surface antigen reduction, aiming to expand effective treatment options and improve functional cure rates for patients living with chronic hepatitis B infection.

  • WHY INTERNATIONAL PATIENTS CHOOSE CHINA

Why patients travel to China for treatment

Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.

Clinical capability at international standard

Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.

Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months

A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.

Transparent, itemised pricing

Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.

Policy channels that open the door

China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
