About Dr. Li Guoxin
Professor Li Guoxin is Vice President of Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University and academic leader of gastrointestinal surgery, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has devoted thirty-five years to gastrointestinal tumour surgery, performing more than ten thousand major operations, and created a precise minimally invasive surgical system for gastric cancer. He proposed a new anatomy for minimally invasive gastric surgery, founded the Chinese Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery Study Group and led the CLASS-01 trial, which provided the first level-one evidence that laparoscopic surgery is safe and effective for locally advanced gastric cancer. He is a chief scientist of a National Key R&D Programme project.

Dr. Li Guoxin ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Gastric cancer
He performs laparoscopic and robotic radical gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy for gastric cancer, using a precise minimally invasive technique to remove the tumour and lymph nodes completely, reduce surgical trauma and speed recovery for patients with early and locally advanced gastric cancer.
Colorectal cancer
He treats colon and rectal cancer with laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery, combining complete mesocolic and total mesorectal excision with individualised treatment planning to achieve radical resection, preserve function and improve long-term survival for patients with these common gastrointestinal tumours.
Gastrointestinal stromal tumour and benign disease
He removes gastrointestinal stromal tumours and manages benign stomach and bowel diseases such as hernia, using minimally invasive techniques to achieve complete resection, repair defects and reduce postoperative pain and hospital stay for patients with these common surgical conditions in routine clinical practice.
More:early gastric cancer——laparoscopic resection; gastric lymph node metastasis——precision prediction; peritoneal metastasis——conversion therapy; hernia——repair; colorectal cancer——minimally invasive surgery
Selected cases, research & publications
Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. CLASS-01 Trial: Laparoscopic versus Open Distal Gastrectomy for Advanced Gastric Cancer
This multicenter randomized trial led by Li Guoxin assigned one thousand fifty six patients with locally advanced gastric cancer to laparoscopic or open distal gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy. The five-year overall survival rates were seventy two point six and seventy six point three percent, showing laparoscopic surgery is not inferior when performed by experienced surgeons at high-volume centres.

2. Pooled Analysis of KLASS-02 and CLASS-01: Long-Term Outcomes of Laparoscopic Gastrectomy
This individual patient data meta-analysis pooled the Korean KLASS-02 and Chinese CLASS-01 trials to compare laparoscopic with open distal gastrectomy in around one thousand eight hundred patients with locally advanced gastric cancer. Five-year overall survival was about eighty three percent in both groups, confirming the oncological safety of minimally invasive gastrectomy.
3. Laparoscopic Endoscopic Cooperative Surgery versus Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection for Gastric GIST
This propensity-score matched study from Li Guoxin’s team compared laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery with endoscopic submucosal dissection for small gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumours. Cooperative surgery produced fewer intraoperative complications and less bleeding, with equal postoperative courses and no significant difference in recurrence, supporting it as a safe minimally invasive option for selected gastric GIST patients.

4. Surgical Innovations to Target Gastric and Liver Cancers
A Nature spotlight feature describes how Li Guoxin, director of general surgery at Nanfang Hospital, introduced new standards for minimally invasive gastric cancer surgery, from lymph node dissection to digestive tract reconstruction. Building on laparoscopy, the work reduces surgical bleeding and pain, improves wound appearance and speeds postoperative recovery for patients with gastric cancer.

5. Clinical Trials on Gastric Cancer Surgery in China
This review summarises gastric cancer surgery trials conducted in mainland China, including the CLASS series led by Li Guoxin that examined laparoscopic distal gastrectomy, spleen-preserving lymph node dissection, digestive reconstruction and image-guided minimally invasive treatment. It documents how the CLASS group advanced evidence for minimally invasive gastric cancer surgery and improved patient quality of life.

6. CLASS-01 Trial Summary: Safety of Laparoscopic Gastrectomy for Advanced Gastric Cancer
The CLASS-01 randomized controlled trial directed by Li Guoxin was the first completed multicenter study comparing long-term outcomes of laparoscopic and open distal gastrectomy for locally advanced gastric cancer in China. Its three-year and five-year results showed comparable disease-free and overall survival, providing high-level evidence that supports laparoscopic gastrectomy as a standard treatment.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
