About Dr. Zhou Canquan
Professor Zhou Canquan is academic leader of the Reproductive Medicine Center at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology. He began working in assisted reproductive technology in 1987 and, as a core member of the team, helped establish the hospital's reproductive medicine centre and its in-vitro fertilisation programme in 1989. He has devoted his career to infertility treatment and reproductive genetics, advancing preimplantation genetic diagnosis for thalassaemia and other inherited diseases, and has trained many specialists who now lead reproductive medicine services across China.

Dr. Zhou Canquan ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
In-vitro fertilisation
He provides in-vitro fertilisation and other assisted reproductive treatments for couples with infertility, individualising ovarian stimulation, embryo culture and transfer to maximise the chance of a healthy pregnancy while minimising complications for women and their babies and families in routine clinical practice.
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis
He pioneered preimplantation genetic diagnosis in China, allowing embryos to be screened for thalassaemia and other inherited diseases before transfer, so that couples at risk of passing on serious genetic disorders can have an unaffected child of their own in clinical practice.
Complex infertility and menstrual disorders
He diagnoses and treats complex infertility, menstrual disorders and reproductive endocrine disease, integrating hormonal assessment, ultrasound and laboratory testing to identify the cause and design individualised treatment plans for women with difficult fertility problems and their partners in routine care.
More:male infertility——assessment; recurrent miscarriage——management; fertility preservation——counselling; ovarian reserve——evaluation; reproductive genetics——testing
Selected cases, research & publications
Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis for alpha- and beta-thalassemia
This clinical programme applied fluorescent gap PCR and multiplex nested PCR to screen embryos before transfer for couples who are both thalassemia carriers. Among eight couples treated, three pregnancies were achieved and three healthy babies were born, confirming the accuracy of preimplantation genetic diagnosis for thalassemia carriers.

2. Noninvasive medium-based screening for alpha-thalassemia-SEA embryos
This study established a noninvasive method that detects the Southeast Asian deletion causing alpha-thalassemia from culture medium, avoiding blastomere biopsy. Testing 413 embryos from 38 carrier couples, the approach identified affected and unaffected embryos accurately, offering thalassemia carrier couples undergoing in vitro fertilisation a safer way to select healthy embryos.

3. Karyomapping-based preimplantation genetic testing with HLA matching
This systematic summary evaluated karyomapping for beta-thalassemia families who also need a human leukocyte antigen-matched donor sibling. Combining mutation detection with HLA matching in a single embryo test shortens the diagnostic workflow and improves reliability, helping carrier couples conceive a healthy, immunologically compatible child through in vitro fertilisation.

4. Pregnancy outcomes in polycystic ovary syndrome after frozen blastocyst transfer
This propensity score-matched study compared pregnancy outcomes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome who conceived after single thawed blastocyst transfer with those of women without the condition. The findings support individualised frozen embryo transfer protocols and careful metabolic and endometrial preparation for infertility patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.

5. Preventing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome during IVF stimulation
This systematic review and network meta-analysis compared pharmacological strategies used to prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in women undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation. It provides clinicians with comparative evidence for choosing preventive treatment, an important safety measure for patients at risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome during in vitro fertilisation treatment.

6. Twin pregnancy outcomes after in vitro fertilisation
This large retrospective study examined dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancies after in vitro fertilisation and the effect of spontaneous fetal reduction on maternal and neonatal outcomes. The results help clinicians counsel infertility patients about multifetal pregnancy risk and guide monitoring and management during twin pregnancy following assisted reproduction.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
