About Dr. Zhuang Jian
Dr. Zhuang Jian is Chief Expert in cardiac surgery at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital and Director of the Guangdong Cardiovascular Centre. A former president of the hospital, he has devoted his career to the prevention and treatment of complex and critical congenital heart disease. He led the development of surgical guidelines suited to China's clinical practice and built a provincial congenital heart disease prevention and registration system, helping bring his team to international standards. His clinical research on anomalous pulmonary venous connection and the Fontan procedure has been published in leading cardiology journals. He is a recipient of the State Council Special Allowance.

Dr. Zhuang Jian ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Congenital heart disease surgery
He repairs complex congenital heart defects in newborns, infants and children, including tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great arteries and pulmonary atresia, restoring normal circulation and safely improving long-term survival and quality of life for affected children and their families.
Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection
He is internationally recognized for the surgical management of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, having reported one of the world's largest paediatric cohorts and refined strategies that significantly reduce early mortality and late complications and improve long-term outcomes in newborns and infants.
Fontan circulation and complex repairs
He performs staged and definitive surgery for single-ventricle physiology, including the Fontan procedure and cavopulmonary connection, using haemodynamic assessment to optimize circulation in children throughout childhood with the most complex heart defects, carefully balancing pulmonary blood flow, oxygen delivery and ventricular workload.
More: adult congenital heart disease——follow-up surgery; valvular heart disease——repair; coronary artery disease——bypass surgery; aortic disease——surgery; heart failure——surgical evaluation

Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection: The Current Management Strategies in a Pediatric Cohort of 768 Patients
Zhuang Jian co-authored this landmark analysis of 768 infants and children who underwent surgical repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) in China. Comparing conventional repair with the sutureless technique, the study identified risk factors for death and recurrent pulmonary venous obstruction and showed that early, complete repair restores normal pulmonary venous drainage with acceptable long-term survival.

2. The Outcomes of Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection in Neonates: A 10-Year Single-Center Experience
This retrospective single-center series reports the surgical outcomes of neonates with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) treated under Zhuang Jian’s team. It documents early mortality, postoperative pulmonary venous obstruction and reoperation, and confirms that dedicated neonatal intensive care, precise preoperative echocardiography and timely surgical repair can achieve encouraging survival in newborns with obstructed TAPVC.

3. Modified Extracardiac Fontan With Direct Total Cavopulmonary Connection Using Autologous Vessels
In a 10-year single-centre series, Zhuang Jian and colleagues described a modified extracardiac Fontan procedure using direct total cavopulmonary connection with entirely autologous vessels in 31 children with functionally univentricular hearts. The technique avoids prosthetic material, preserves growth potential, and delivered an 88.9% ten-year event-free survival with no late arrhythmia, thromboembolism or protein-losing enteropathy.

4. Perventricular Device Closure Versus Surgical Repair for Ventricular Septal Defect
Zhuang Jian led this systematic review and meta-analysis of 4,381 children comparing perventricular device closure with conventional surgical repair for congenital ventricular septal defect. Pooled data showed device closure causes less surgical trauma, leaves smaller scars and shortens hospital stay, but carries a higher residual shunt rate, helping families and clinicians choose the best treatment.

5. China’s First Fetal In-Utero Cardiac Intervention for Critical Pulmonary Valve Stenosis
In 2016 Zhuang Jian’s team performed China’s first fetal in-utero cardiac intervention, treating a 28-week fetus with severe pulmonary valve stenosis and a hypoplastic right ventricle. Under ultrasound guidance a balloon catheter was advanced through the mother’s abdomen to dilate the near-atretic valve, restoring forward flow and allowing the right ventricle to grow before birth.
6. Maternal Serum Folate and Congenital Heart Disease Risk in Offspring
Researchers led by Zhuang Jian’s congenital heart disease team at Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital found a U-shaped link between maternal serum folate and congenital heart disease in children. Analysing 129 infants and 516 matched controls, both low and high folate levels raised risk, while vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine amplified it, guiding safer, personalised folic acid supplementation during pregnancy.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
