About Dr. Chen Jiyan

Dr. Chen Jiyan is Chief Expert in cardiology at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital and director of the Guangdong Key Laboratory for Coronary Heart Disease Prevention and Research. A former director of the cardiology department and deputy director of the Guangdong Cardiovascular Institute, he helped pioneer interventional cardiology in China. His research focuses on the prevention of contrast-associated acute kidney injury and antithrombotic therapy during percutaneous coronary intervention, with landmark trials published in leading cardiovascular journals. He is a recipient of the State Council Special Allowance, the National May 1st Labour Medal and the title of China Famous Doctor.

Dr. Chen Jiyan ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise

Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.

Coronary intervention

He performs complex percutaneous coronary intervention for stable and acute coronary syndromes, including high-risk lesions and chronic total occlusions, and helped pioneer techniques that expanded access to interventional cardiology for patients across southern China with excellent outcomes over four decades.

Prevention of contrast-induced kidney injury

He has led multicentre randomised trials on hydration strategies that protect kidney function in high-risk patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing coronary angiography and stenting, changing clinical practice and improving the safety of interventional procedures worldwide, including in patients with diabetes and heart failure.

Antithrombotic therapy

He studies parenteral anticoagulation and antiplatelet strategies during percutaneous coronary intervention, leading large analyses that guide safe, effective treatment for patients with acute coronary syndromes and reduce ischaemic and bleeding complications in real-world routine practice and long-term follow-up across China.

More: hypertension——diagnosis and management; heart failure——medical therapy; hyperlipidaemia——risk control; preventive cardiology——screening; cardiac rehabilitation——recovery

  • Clinical Practice & Publications

Selected cases, research & publications

Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Simplified Rapid Hydration to Prevent Contrast-Associated Acute Kidney Injury After Coronary Angiography or Stenting
In a landmark multicentre randomised trial of 1002 chronic kidney disease patients undergoing coronary angiography or percutaneous coronary intervention, Chen Jiyan’s team showed a simplified one-hour pre-procedural saline hydration protocol prevented contrast-associated acute kidney injury as effectively as standard 24-hour hydration, shortening treatment time and hospital stay for high-risk heart patients.
2. Aggressive Hydration for Preventing Kidney Injury After Primary PCI for Acute Myocardial Infarction
This open-label randomised clinical trial across 15 Chinese teaching hospitals randomised 560 ST-elevation myocardial infarction patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Aggressive peri-operative saline hydration guided by left ventricular end-diastolic pressure reduced contrast-induced acute kidney injury versus general hydration, without increasing acute heart failure, informing safer emergency angioplasty for heart attack patients with renal risk.
3. Parenteral Anticoagulation Therapy and Outcomes in Chinese Patients Undergoing PCI for Non-ST-Segment Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome
Analysing 6804 acute coronary syndrome patients from five Chinese centres who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention, Chen Jiyan and colleagues found routine parenteral anticoagulation did not lower death or myocardial infarction but significantly increased major bleeding. The JAMA Internal Medicine study reshaped antithrombotic strategy for heart attack and unstable angina patients receiving coronary stents.
4. Glucose-Lowering Drug Targets and Cardio-Renal-Liver-Metabolic Health (Metabolism)
Chen Jiyan’s cardiology team integrated large cohorts, real-world data and genetic analyses to assess how glucose-lowering drugs affect heart, kidney and liver metabolic disease. They reported SGLT2 inhibitors broadly protected cardiorenal and hepatic health, GLP-1 receptor agonists benefited chronic kidney disease, guiding personalised therapy for diabetes patients with cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
5. Underdiagnosis, Treatment Pattern and Awareness of Chronic Kidney Disease in Cardiovascular Patients (Heart)
In a national observational study of 2099 cardiovascular inpatients across 25 Chinese tertiary hospitals, Chen Jiyan and co-investigators found nearly eighty percent of chronic kidney disease was undiagnosed, with few patients receiving guideline-recommended SGLT2 inhibitor or RAS inhibitor therapy, urging better kidney screening for heart disease patients.
6. Catheter-Based Renal Sympathetic Denervation for Resistant Hypertension: Durability of Blood Pressure Reduction
Chen Jiyan and colleagues reviewed the Symplicity HTN-1 experience of catheter-based renal sympathetic denervation in 153 patients with resistant hypertension, documenting sustained blood-pressure reduction beyond two years and acceptable safety. The appraisal supported renal denervation as an interventional option for difficult-to-control hypertension unresponsive to multiple antihypertensive drugs.

  • WHY INTERNATIONAL PATIENTS CHOOSE CHINA

Why patients travel to China for treatment

Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.

Clinical capability at international standard

Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.

Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months

A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.

Transparent, itemised pricing

Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.

Policy channels that open the door

China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
