Dr. Jian Zhixiang ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise

Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.

Liver cancer

Laparoscopic and open liver resection with ICG fluorescence guidance; his team performs precise anatomical liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma, achieving good oncological outcomes with less trauma and faster recovery, and he is a leading expert in ICG-guided laparoscopic liver resection in China.

Pancreatic tumors

Pancreaticoduodenectomy and minimally invasive pancreatic surgery; his comparative studies on laparoscopic versus open pancreaticoduodenectomy help refine surgical strategy for pancreatic duct adenocarcinoma and improve survival, drawing on more than thirty years of experience in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery and multidisciplinary management.

Complex bile duct stones

Minimally invasive treatment of intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct stones; he combines choledochoscopy and laparoscopic techniques to clear difficult stones while preserving liver function, and this approach reduces surgical trauma so patients with complex stone disease recover faster with less pain.

Selected cases, research & publications

Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. World-first laparoscopic retroperitoneal hepatectomy
In 2015 the surgical team performed the world’s first laparoscopic hepatectomy via a retroperitoneal approach for a subcapsular hepatocellular carcinoma, avoiding the abdominal cavity. The technique was published in Annals of Surgery and offers a minimally invasive option for tumors near the adrenal gland or in difficult liver segments.
2. Resection of central complex liver cancer
A patient with a central liver cancer encasing the inferior vena cava over 180 degrees underwent precise resection. Using careful vascular dissection and intraoperative control, the team removed the tumor with less than 200 ml blood loss, and the patient was able to get out of bed two days after surgery.
3. ICG fluorescence-guided laparoscopic hepatectomy
For a 75-year-old patient with liver cancer, the surgical team used indocyanine green fluorescence navigation to visualize tumor margins and biliary anatomy in real time. This enabled a precise, nearly bloodless laparoscopic liver resection with negative margins and a rapid, uncomplicated postoperative recovery, shortening the hospital stay.
4. Resection of a giant liver cancer
A patient with hepatitis B presented with a 10-centimeter liver tumor. The surgical team completed the resection in about half an hour, controlling bleeding and preserving healthy liver tissue, and the patient recovered smoothly with good liver function and no major complications.
5. Single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy
The team performs single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy, using one small incision near the umbilicus to reduce postoperative pain and scarring while maintaining safety. This minimally invasive approach shortens recovery and is favored by patients with gallbladder stones and polyps requiring surgery.
6. Minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgery leadership
With more than thirty years in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, the chief led the department at a major provincial hospital before joining the hospital. He has contributed to national guidelines and trained many surgeons, focusing on minimally invasive and precise liver resection techniques.

  • WHY INTERNATIONAL PATIENTS CHOOSE CHINA

Why patients travel to China for treatment

Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.

Clinical capability at international standard

Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.

Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months

A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.

Transparent, itemised pricing

Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.

Policy channels that open the door

China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
