Dr. Lyu Lin is a professor, chief physician and doctoral supervisor at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, and a Zhongshan Outstanding Physician. He has devoted nearly forty years to vitreoretinal surgery and retinal disease, with expertise in complex retinal detachment, highly myopic macular disease and diabetic retinopathy. He has served as a deputy head of the vitreoretinal group of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association ophthalmology branch and as associate editor of the Chinese Journal of Ocular Fundus Diseases. His clinical research on macular buckling and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment has been published in leading retinal journals, and he has trained many vitreoretinal specialists.

Dr. Lv Lin ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Complex retinal detachment
He performs vitrectomy and scleral buckling for rhegmatogenous, tractional and highly myopic retinal detachment, using advanced surgical techniques to reattach the retina and safely restore visual function in difficult, recurrent cases with macular hole or proliferative vitreoretinopathy and improve long-term outcomes.
Diabetic retinopathy
He treats proliferative diabetic retinopathy with vitrectomy, laser and anti-VEGF therapy, controlling neovascularisation and vitreous haemorrhage to preserve vision in patients with advanced diabetes-related retinal disease, and carefully coordinates systemic risk-factor management with endocrinology colleagues over the long term and follow-up.
Macular disease in high myopia
He performs macular buckling and vitrectomy for myopic foveoschisis and macular detachment, using imaging to plan individualised surgery and preserve long-term central vision in highly myopic eyes with progressive macular disease, including those with poor vision and metamorphopsia, and careful monitoring.

Selected cases, research & publications
Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Three-Year Outcomes of Macular Buckling for Macular Holes and Foveoschisis in Highly Myopic Eyes
This Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center study followed 49 highly myopic patients treated with silicone sponge-titanium macular buckling for full-thickness macular hole and foveoschisis. Retinal reattachment reached 100 percent, macular hole closure 76.19 percent, with stable visual improvement and reduced axial length, supporting buckling as a safe, durable surgical option for high myopia retinal detachment and macular hole.

2. Comparison of Macular Buckling and Vitrectomy for Macular Schisis with Macular Detachment in High Myopia: A Randomized Clinical Trial
In this randomized trial at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, 80 highly myopic eyes with myopic traction maculopathy and macular detachment received either macular buckling or vitrectomy. Buckling showed fewer surgical failures, greater visual acuity gain and fewer new macular holes, offering evidence that buckling is preferable to vitrectomy for this myopic maculopathy.

3. Macular Buckling versus Vitrectomy for Macular Hole-Associated Macular Detachment in High Myopia: A Randomized Trial
This prospective trial compared macular buckling and pars plana vitrectomy for highly myopic full-thickness macular hole with macular detachment. Both improved vision, but buckling achieved a significantly higher retinal reattachment success rate and lower primary surgical failure, suggesting an external buckle better addresses posterior staphyloma traction in myopic macular hole retinal detachment.

4. Macular Buckling Combined with Vitrectomy and Inverted ILM Flap for Macular Holes with Retinoschisis in High Myopia
This retrospective study treated highly myopic eyes with full-thickness macular hole and macular retinoschisis using macular buckling with vitrectomy and an inverted internal limiting membrane flap. The combination achieved 92.86 percent macular hole closure and significant visual acuity improvement, demonstrating an effective vitrectomy technique for complex myopic macular hole surgery.

5. Changes in Choroidal Thickness after Macular Buckling in Highly Myopic Eyes
Assessing surgical safety, this study measured choroidal thickness in 41 highly myopic eyes after macular buckling using swept-source OCT. Subfoveal choroid thickened early, then spontaneously returned to preoperative levels by six months, confirming that buckle compression does not cause lasting choroidal damage during treatment of myopic traction maculopathy and retinal detachment.

6. Assessment of Ocular Deformation in Pathologic Myopia Using 3-Dimensional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Using three-dimensional MRI at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, researchers mapped global ocular deformation in pathologic myopia, revealing equatorial and posterior shape patterns linked to myopic maculopathy. This imaging advance guides surgical planning for posterior staphyloma, macular hole and retinal detachment, helping clinicians personalize treatment for patients with high myopia.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
