Dr. Ma Jun ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Optimized intensity-modulated radiotherapy and chemo-radiotherapy strategies; his randomized trials established induction chemotherapy and reduced-intensity approaches that raise cure rates while lowering toxicity for patients with locally advanced disease and help preserve organ function and quality of life during and after treatment.
Locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma
De-escalation and precision radiotherapy; his randomized trials defined which low-risk patients can safely receive radiotherapy alone, sparing them unnecessary chemotherapy and its side effects and improving quality of life while maintaining excellent tumor control and long-term survival for carefully selected patients.
Head and neck cancers
Multidisciplinary radiotherapy and combined-modality management; his research on distant metastasis prevention and metronomic adjuvant chemotherapy has improved long-term survival and become part of international guidelines for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, guiding combined treatment for patients with head and neck tumors around the world.
More: nasopharyngeal carcinoma screening, recurrence and metastasis management, and radiotherapy for other head and neck tumors
Selected cases, research & publications
Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. TPF Induction Chemotherapy Plus Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy for Locoregionally Advanced Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
Landmark phase 3 trial led by Professor Ma Jun showing that adding docetaxel, cisplatin and fluorouracil (TPF) induction chemotherapy before concurrent chemoradiotherapy significantly improved failure-free survival in patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, compared with chemoradiotherapy alone. This changed global treatment guidelines for nasopharyngeal cancer and helps patients seeking induction chemotherapy for advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

2. Gemcitabine and Cisplatin Induction Chemotherapy in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
A multicenter, randomized phase 3 trial from Professor Ma Jun’s team demonstrating that gemcitabine plus cisplatin (GP) induction chemotherapy added to concurrent chemoradiotherapy significantly improved recurrence-free and overall survival in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. This regimen became a widely recommended induction option, helping patients searching for gemcitabine cisplatin chemotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma worldwide.

3. Long-Term Survival Outcomes of TPF Induction Chemotherapy and Chemoradiotherapy in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
Long-term follow-up of a phase 3 randomized controlled trial confirmed that docetaxel, cisplatin and fluorouracil (TPF) induction chemotherapy plus concurrent chemoradiotherapy produced durable five-year survival gains in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, with no marked increase in late toxicities. Useful evidence for patients considering induction chemotherapy and IMRT for advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

4. Adjuvant Metronomic Capecitabine After Chemoradiotherapy for High-Risk Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
Phase 3 trial showing that one year of adjuvant metronomic capecitabine after standard chemoradiotherapy significantly improved failure-free survival in high-risk locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, with manageable hand-foot syndrome. Professor Ma Jun’s team established this low-toxicity oral maintenance strategy for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma at high risk of recurrence.

5. Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy Versus Conventional Radiotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
Comparative study showing that intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) improved target coverage and reduced radiation to nearby organs at risk compared with conventional two-dimensional radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, yielding better tumor control and fewer side effects. This evidence helped establish IMRT as the standard radiation technique, guiding patients seeking IMRT for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

6. Refining the AJCC/UICC Eighth Edition Staging System for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
International study supporting the 8th edition AJCC/UICC staging system for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, refining T and N categories for the IMRT era so doctors can better predict prognosis and select the right treatment intensity, from radiotherapy alone to combined chemoradiotherapy, for each patient’s nasopharyngeal cancer.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
