About Dr. Hou Fanfan
Professor Hou Fanfan is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the World Academy of Sciences and Director of the National Clinical Research Centre for Kidney Disease and the Key Laboratory for Organ Failure Research at Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University. She trained at Harvard Medical School and has devoted her career to the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease. Her landmark trial in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that the ACE inhibitor benazepril slows progression of advanced chronic renal insufficiency, changing international treatment guidelines. She has published over 130 papers, led 14 national and provincial projects, and received two National Science and Technology Progress Awards.

Dr. Hou Fanfan ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Chronic kidney disease
She diagnoses and treats chronic kidney disease of all stages, combining blood pressure control, renin-angiotensin blockade and lifestyle management to slow kidney function decline, reduce proteinuria and delay progression to dialysis for patients living with this common and progressive condition.
Diabetic and hypertensive kidney disease
She manages kidney damage caused by diabetes and hypertension, integrating glucose and blood pressure control, renin-angiotensin system inhibition and regular monitoring to protect residual kidney function and prevent cardiovascular complications in patients with these metabolic and vascular kidney diseases in routine clinical practice.
Glomerulonephritis and lupus nephritis
She treats primary glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome and lupus nephritis with individualised immunosuppressive and renoprotective therapy, using kidney biopsy and immunological testing to control inflammation, reduce proteinuria and preserve kidney function over the long term in patients with these immune-mediated kidney diseases.

1. Benazepril for Advanced Chronic Renal Insufficiency: A Landmark Randomized Trial
This multicenter randomized trial led by Hou Fanfan tested benazepril, an ACE inhibitor, in 422 patients with advanced chronic kidney disease. Adding benazepril to standard therapy reduced the risk of the composite endpoint, including progression to dialysis, by about forty three percent, changing global treatment strategies for advanced kidney disease and chronic renal insufficiency patients.

2. ROAD Study: Optimal Antiproteinuric Doses of Benazepril and Losartan
The ROAD study randomized 360 non-diabetic patients with proteinuria and chronic renal insufficiency to conventional or uptitrated benazepril and losartan. Titrating to optimal antiproteinuric doses reduced the risk of the primary renal endpoint by fifty one and fifty three percent, showing that dose optimization guided by residual proteinuria improves kidney outcomes for patients with chronic renal insufficiency.

3. Urate-Lowering Therapy for Chronic Kidney Disease with Hyperuricemia
This multicenter real-world study analyzed more than fifty thousand chronic kidney disease patients with hyperuricemia from the Chinese kidney big database. Led by Hou Fanfan, it showed that starting urate-lowering therapy reduced the three-year relative risk of kidney adverse events by fifteen percent, including lower end-stage kidney disease and all-cause mortality, regardless of gout.
4. National Most Beautiful Doctor Award 2025
In August 2025 Hou Fanfan, nephrologist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at Nanfang Hospital, was named one of nine National Most Beautiful Doctors. The award recognized her fifty years of kidney research and her leadership of China’s largest kidney disease database and the first Chinese chronic kidney disease management artificial intelligence model.
5. Center-Monitored Home Automated Peritoneal Dialysis Program
Since 2022 Hou Fanfan’s team has built a three-tier remotely monitored automated peritoneal dialysis model linking central hospitals, community clinics and patients’ homes. Patients connect the device at night and disconnect in the morning, completing dialysis during sleep. The program now covers remote regions in Guizhou, Fujian, Guangxi and Yunnan, improving access for uremia patients.

6. Zhishen Artificial Intelligence Model for Chronic Kidney Disease Management
In 2025 Hou Fanfan led the release of Zhishen, China’s first comprehensive chronic kidney disease management large language model. Built on tens of millions of records from the Chinese kidney database and the latest guidelines, it provides patients with disease management advice and personalized diets and supports primary-care doctors in underserved areas with specialist kidney guidance.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
