About Dr. Zhang Qingjiong
Dr. Zhang Qingjiong is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, and Executive Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology. A recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, he has devoted his career to the genetic basis of paediatric and inherited eye disease. His team has identified numerous genes and mutations underlying congenital cataract, high myopia, retinal dystrophy and cone disorders, and built one of China's largest resources for genetic eye disease. He has published more than 200 papers in international journals and serves in medical genetics societies at home and abroad.

Dr. Zhang Qingjiong ’s Three Key Areas of Expertise
Three areas of focused expertise, each supported by a deep subspecialty team, high case volumes and an English-speaking care pathway coordinated by Orisene.
Inherited retinal disease
He diagnoses and manages inherited retinal dystrophies and cone-rod disorders, using genetic testing to identify causative mutations, carefully counsel and support families and guide long-term surveillance and emerging future gene-based treatments and management for these progressive blinding conditions in children and adults.
Congenital and early-onset high myopia
He investigates the genetic causes of congenital and early-onset high myopia, identifying genes such as ARR3, and provides accurate genetic diagnosis, risk assessment, family counselling and family support to guide early intervention and visual care for affected children and their relatives.
Paediatric genetic eye disease
He evaluates children with congenital cataract, nystagmus, amblyopia and syndromic eye disorders, carefully integrating detailed clinical examination with genetic testing to reach a precise diagnosis and coordinate individualised multidisciplinary care, support services, genetic counselling and long-term follow-up for affected families.
More: congenital cataract——genetic diagnosis; nystagmus——evaluation; amblyopia——management; retinal dystrophy——genetic testing; genetic counselling——family support
Selected cases, research & publications
Representative work drawn from documented clinical treatments, publicly indexed literature, and hospital project records, reflecting the depth of this physician's hands-on expertise and academic rigor.
1. Identification of TRIM49 as a Novel Causative Gene for Autosomal Recessive Retinitis Pigmentosa
Using whole-exome sequencing of unrelated retinitis pigmentosa families against 7,283 in-house controls, this study identified biallelic TRIM49 variants as a novel cause of autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa. Functional analyses showed TRIM49 regulates ULK1-mediated autophagy and photoreceptor phagocytosis in retinal pigment epithelium, offering a new therapeutic target for inherited retinal disease and retinal degeneration.

2. X-Linked Heterozygous Mutations in ARR3 Cause Female-Limited Early-Onset High Myopia
This study first linked heterozygous ARR3 mutations to early-onset high myopia restricted to females, defining Myopia-26 with X-linked female-limited inheritance. Combining linkage analysis and whole-exome sequencing across three families, it revealed a novel hereditary pattern, providing a molecular basis for genetic diagnosis, genetic counseling, and early myopia management in affected families.

3. Genetic and Clinical Landscape of ARR3-Associated MYP26 in Early-Onset High Myopia
In 928 Chinese families with early-onset high myopia, ARR3 emerged as the most frequently implicated Mendelian gene. Twenty-four pathogenic variants caused mild cone impairment and slowly progressive pathologic myopia under X-linked female-limited inheritance. The findings guide molecular diagnosis, risk prediction, and clinical monitoring for inherited high myopia and myopic retinopathy.

4. An Ophthalmic Targeted Exome Sequencing Panel for Precision Diagnosis of Hereditary Eye Diseases
This next-generation sequencing panel covers 126 genes, achieving a 52% diagnostic yield across 568 probands with hereditary eye diseases, including inherited retinal degeneration and retinal dystrophy. It enables rapid, affordable clinical genetic testing with a 30-day turnaround, improving genetic counseling, prognosis, and access to gene-specific therapy for families.
5. Bietti Crystalline Corneoretinal Dystrophy Caused by Mutations in the Novel Gene CYP4V2
This landmark genetic study identified CYP4V2 mutations as the cause of autosomal recessive Bietti crystalline corneoretinal dystrophy in most tested patients, characterized by retinal crystals, progressive night blindness, and visual field constriction. The discovery established the molecular basis for genetic diagnosis and for emerging CYP4V2 gene therapy in inherited retinal disease.

6. Variant and Clinical Landscape of Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy in 1516 Families
Analyzing 1540 patients from 1516 families, this study defined the mtDNA variant spectrum and prognostic features of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy. A novel optic disc progression grade predicted blindness risk, showing that later onset and higher grade worsen prognosis. These insights guide genetic testing, counseling, and emerging gene therapy for inherited optic neuropathy.

Why patients travel to China for treatment
Six reasons international patients now put China on their shortlist — from internationally aligned clinical capability to the policy channels that make treatment here genuinely reachable.
Clinical capability at international standard
Chinese hospitals deliver internationally aligned protocols, performing vast volumes of advanced robotic, minimally invasive, and complex transplant surgeries annually. This massive clinical data and highly specialized workforce ensure world-class outcomes, even for rare and complex cases.
Diagnostics and treatment in days, not months
A full medical workup that typically means months of waiting elsewhere is completed in China within 48–72 hours. Imaging, labs, and multidisciplinary consultations are integrated into a single visit, allowing treatment to commence immediately.
Transparent, itemised pricing
Chinese healthcare offers legally binding, itemised cost estimates before treatment begins, eliminating hidden fees or surprise billing. Due to national centralized procurement, total expenses remain 40–70% lower than comparable care in Western Europe or North America.
Policy channels that open the door
China facilitates access through 240-hour visa-free transit and dedicated medical visa routes. Policies like the Greater Bay Area drug pathway and Boao Lecheng’s pilot zone allow designated hospitals to administer innovative therapies not yet globally approved.
